I’ve read your articles on evaluations, but I’m curious about whether you personally endorse raises that are tied to those evaluations. Or do you believe that pay and evaluations are two separate entities?
This is an area that has great pluses and minuses on each side. Here is my current thinking: I believe salary and evaluations should be tied together. We recommend using an objective measurement tool, so that just happens naturally. I do suggest that development discussions and development plans take place throughout the year, and that they are not tied to salary but to individual development. I like development planning outside end-of-year evaluation. This way the discussion can focus on development without the emotional pull that a salary discussion can have.
